Welcome to the website of the Telerobotic and Biorobotic Systems
Group, where we aim to improve the existing technology and develop new
technologies for robotics- and telerobotics-assisted surgery and
therapy. A telerobotic system makes it possible for a human operator
to interact with an environment that is inaccessible to direct human
contact due to its remoteness such as in outer space or due to its
workspace constraints such as inside the human body cavity. We are
interested in the design and control of human-machine interfaces for
such telerobotic systems in order to facilitate optimum use of various
sensing modalities of humans including haptics (sense of touch) and
vision, thereby enabling a more efficient, accurate and safe
operation. We also study robot control systems that use medical
images, which are rich in spatial information, for enabling a human
operator to guide a robot to desired positions in a patient with
superhuman precision and control. These technologies will ultimately
reduce the burden on the healthcare system by making medical
interventions more efficient and less traumatic.
