DC Machine

0.2 kW DC Machine - Model 8211
DATASHEET - 0.2 kW Motor-Generators

This machine can be run independently as a DC motor or a DC generator. The armature, shunt field, and series field windings are terminated separately on the faceplate to permit long and short shunt as well as cumulatively and differentially compounded motor and generator connections. This machine is fitted with exposed movable brushes to allow students to study the effect of armature reaction and commutation while the machine is operating under load. An independent, circuit- breaker protected, shunt-field rheostat is mounted on the faceplate for motor speed control or generator output voltage adjustment.

Dynamometer

0.2 kW Electro-mechanical Load - Model 8911
DATASHEET - 0.2kW Dyno

The Model 8911 Electrodynamometer is equipped with a clear plastic faceplate fitted with a chrome piano hinge. It can be coupled to a 0.2-kW drive motor through the use of the Timing Belt (Model 8942). The faceplate can be lowered to provide access to the inside for coupling the Electrodynamometer to the drive motor. When closed, the faceplate is secured by two quick-lock fasteners.

The Electrodynamometer is made of a squirrel-cage rotor fitted in a DC-excited stator. Mechanical loading is achieved by increasing the stator field current, which generates eddy currents in the driven rotor. The stator is trunnion-mounted on ball bearings and rotates against a

helicoidal spring to oppose braking torque. The front end bell is provided with a circular scale that indicates the torque developed. The circular scale is graduated in either Imperial units (, Model 8911) or Metric units (, Model 8911-1) depending on model numbers. A damper lever is located underneath the dynamometer to prevent oscillation if the power supply is applied while the dynamometer is turning. To measure the torque, this lever can be pushed to adjust and read the torque. The Electrodynamometer is electrically powered from standard fixed AC line supply.

Induction Machine

Four-Pole Squirrel-Cage Induction Machine - Model 8503
DATASHEET - 2kW EM System

The Four-Pole Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor consists of a 3-phase machine rated at 2 kW. Each phase of the stator winding is accessible via the connection module to allow wye or delta connections. The machine is equipped with a standard cast-aluminum squirrel cage rotor.

The winding dimensions permit the study of machine operation as a squirrel-cage induction motor or as an asynchronous generator when driven by a prime mover. The machine has a 5-turn, full-pitch stator search coil to allow the observation of the instantaneous flux distribution.

Wiring Module

Wiring Module for Squirrel-Cage Induction Machine - Model 8504
DATASHEET - 2kW EM System

The Wiring Module for Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor consists of a connection module. It provides connection access to the Four-Pole Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor from the Mobile Workstation through a flexible connecting cable. The module has six 4-mm color-coded safety jacks for the power windings and two 2-mm jacks for the stator search coils. Jacks of different sizes prevent accidental connections between power windings and search coils.

Synchronous Machine

2kW Three-phase Wound-field Synchronous Machine - Model 8507
DATASHEET - 2kW EM System

The Three-Phase Wound-Rotor Induction Motor consists of a 4-pole machine rated at 2 kW. Each phase of the stator winding is accessible via the connection module to allow wye or delta connections. The rotor is wye connected to four slip rings to give access to all windings, including neutral.

The winding dimensions permit the study of operation as a wound-rotor induction motor, a frequency converter, a phase-shifter, a position controller, a variable-coupling single-phase transformer, a three-phase transformer, and an asynchronous induction generator.

The machine also has three search coils permitting observation of the flux distribution at one pole of the stator, at one tooth, and at the full-pitch of the rotor.

Wiring Module

DATASHEET - 2kW EM System

The Wiring Module for Wound-Rotor Induction Motor consists of a connection module. It provides connection access to the Three-Phase Wound-Rotor Induction Motor from the Mobile Workstation through a flexible connecting cable. The module has ten 4-mm color-coded safety jacks for the power windings and six 2-mm jacks for the search coils. Jacks of different sizes prevent accidental connections between power windings and search coils.

Dynamometer

2kW Four-quadrant Dynamometer - Model 8540
DATASHEET - 2kW 4Q Dyno

The Four-Quadrant Dynamometer, Model 8540, is a new model which can be integrated to the Lab-Volt 2-kW Electromechanical Training System, Model 8013. This model can act as a prime mover or as a dynamometer, depending on user preference, and it can easily be coupled to any motor and generator from the Lab-Volt 2-kW product line.

The Four-Quadrant Dynamometer consists of a squirrel cage induction motor with an encoder feedback. The motor is driven by a closed-loop vector drive which is coupled to a touch-screen HMI (Human-Machine Interface). This interface enables the user to select the mode

of operation (Speed or Torque mode) and to set either the speed (rpm) and direction or the output torque (NAm or lbAft). The interface displays the main parameters of operation in real-time (Voltage, Current, Torque, Speed, Frequency).

Electrical connections between the vector drive and the motor are made through jumpers on the front panel. This makes the separation of both components simple and allows the motor or the vector drive to be used independently in other experimentations.

The vector drive is well protected against abuse. The vector drive will stop if a problem occurs and the LCD will show the current alarm along with its description. The user is then able to reset the alarm and resume normal operation.

The Four-Quadrant Dynamometer comes with an electronic user guide which describes how to use the different functions of the module. The model can also be interfaced with a computer for monitoring and control. A demonstration application using National Instruments LabVIEW is included on same DVD-ROM as the electronic user guide. To use that application, the user must also order an optional communication cable, Model 88362.
