Comparing Yahoo's Egroups...

The formatting (albeit sparse) is only visible in a graphical browser that supports web standards. Since we're feeling good (and thanks to stylesheets... well mostly due to style sheets) you can see all the content on this page in black and white. Enjoy!

Egroups vs. RCS

Revision Control System (RCS) is great for handling different versions of files, as is Unix's group function to handle access; however, Egroups allows for better communication and easy-to-use file management system when compared to the standard command-line Unix system. With the way the Nyquist server is heading (SSH access-text-only) using RCS and group functions only works for those with accounts on the server-there is no way of bringing a person from outside the department to observe the group without getting special access for that person. Egroups is accessible from any web browser and therefore is a little bit more open for everyone.

Egroups vs. FTP Server

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) allows for a centralized location for all the files; however using a FTP server does not allow you to keep your files, messages and discussions all in one place. Separate programs are needed to keep track of communication and files.
