Laboratory and research support facilities
- Our lab, the Engineered Nanomaterials Laboratory, is located on Level 1 of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Research Facility (ECERF).
- Our group has a fully-facilitised lab with 75 m2 of space including approximately 25 m2 of cleanroom space. There is up to 70 m2 of adjacent space available for potential future expansion.
- Our lab is adjacent to the University of Alberta nanoFAB, a micro- and nano-fabrication facility. The nanoFAB has a diverse suite of fabrication and characterisation equipment available to its user base.
- Additional fabrication and materials characterisation facilities on campus include the Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility (INRF) and the Alberta Centre for Surface Engineering and Sciences (ACSES).
- We are also next door to our department’s machine shop which is well equipped and staffed by highly skilled machinists. The ECE Machine Shop provides technical design/fabrication services for research support. From substrate holders to optics mounts, the machine shop provides extremely useful in-house services to the department’s researchers.
- Office/desk areas are available for students and research staff.
Laboratory equipment
- The centrepiece of the ENL is a state-of-the-art deposition system for growth of nanostructured thin films. Both e-beam evaporation and sputtering are available. Mass flow controllers allow for reactive evaporation and sputtering. A tilting and rotating substrate holder enables oblique and glancing angle deposition. We are currently adding substrate temperature control to our system.
