LASER SCIENCE LAB at the UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA

We study laser physics, ultrafast and nonlinear optics, laser-matter interaction and atomic physics, and how to apply these fields to developing novel quantum technologies and exploring fundamental physics.

A main thrust of our lab is the development of quantum technology based on nuclear spins in noble gases - quantum systems with coherence time of many hours at room temperature! We are developing the novel tool needed to coherently access and manipulate these spins: high-power ultraviolet frequency comb lasers. Please see our RESEARCH page for details.

The Laser Science Lab is part of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. We are also affiliated with the Department of Physics.

in Airborne Standoff Quantum Sensing

RESEARCH PROJECTS

We are members of the Advanced QUAntum applications via complex states in integrated and meta optics (AQUA) Consortium, where we have open graduate students and postdoctroal fellow positions for projects on novel quantum sensing and imaging modalities based on Terahertz radiation.

We collaborate with the Ultracold Quantum Gases Laboratory and the NRC Photonic Quantum Information Processing group on the NRC Quantum Sensors Challenge funded Room Temperature Magnetic Quantum Sensor Project. This project will develop and utilize ultraviolet frequency comb lasers to coherently access noble gas nuclear spin with long quantum coherence time at room temperature, and to sensing of environmental xenon isotopes.

We are in collaboration with the Nanoscale Optics Lab and the NRC Frequency and Time group on the NRC Quantum Sensors Challenge funded Fiber-Integrated Frequency Comb Using Phase Change Nanaosctructured Metamaterials Project. This project will develop a prototype of a robust and compact portable fiber-integrated frequency comb using novel metamaterials technology, to serve portable optical atomic clocks.

We have partnered with Synergy Aviation Ltd. and researchers from the NRC Quantum and Nanotechnologies and Metrology Research Centres on developing airborne standoff quantum sensing of pipeline methane leaks.
