X-Win - Graphically Accessing a UNIX Machine from a PC (or Mac)
What is X-Win32?
X-Win32 is a 32-bit software application developed by Starnet Communications. It allows transparent access to Unix workstations from a PC (or Mac using ?X-Mac?).
What can it do for me?
X-Win32 will allow you to remotely access a UNIX workstation via the Internet.
For example, a user can connect their home PC to the Internet, run X-Win32 and remotely connect and login to a Unix machine. The user can then begin to execute X applications and watch them appear on their Windows 9x/NT/32s machine!
This is extremely useful for running X applications which are not available on your home PC (Mentor Graphics, Max+PlusII, GNU Compilers, Spice) or for those who just don't like using their Mac at home ;)
What are the system requirements?
How do I use X-Win32?
Here is a brief overview of how to connect to a Unix machine from a Windows 9x machine. More information may be obtained directly from the Starnet Communication site http://www.starnet.com. After downloading and installing the demo version of X-Win32, run the X-Util32 to configure a host X machine to connect to. A dialog box will appear titled X-Win32 Utility. Press Sessions | New Session…, a second dialog box will appear titled New Session, select a name for this new session (ie. CAD07).
Select XDMCP from the Connect using field.
The user will have the choice of running a single X-Win32 window containing the remote machine desktop (Single Window Mode - SWM) OR the choice or running multiple X-applications in individual windows (Multiple Window Mode - MWM). Select your preferred Window setting or use the default configuration.
Next, type in the host machine name (ie. cad07.labs.ualberta.ca), followed by selecting Query under XDMCP Mode. Finally, save your configuration.
Now add the host you created to the list of XHosts, from the X-Win32 Utility window, select Options | XHosts, type in the name of the host you just created and press Add. Close the Utility Window and run X-Win32. A dialog box will appear informing you that the demo version of X-Win32 is restricted to two hour sessions (but you can always reconnect after your time has expired).
To connect to a XHost, right click the X-Win32 Task Bar Icon and select Sessions | CAD07. Shortly you should see a the familiar CAD logon screen, enter your User Name followed by your Password. (you may also wish to select the CDE - Common Desktop Environment). Your X session should begin, using X-Win32 should be similar to using the XWindows from the UofA.
Sounds nifty, where do I pick it up?
You can download a demo version of X-Win32 (limited to 2 hour sessions) from Starnet Communication Site http://www.starnet.com.
