Accessing the UofA News Server
How Can I access a UofA Newsgroup if I use an ISP other than Telus or UofA?
Well boys and girls, this question has been asked by MANY people but I've never come across a solution to the problem…that is until now!
What can it do for me?
If you use an ISP (Internet Service Provider) other than Telus or UofA, you will be able to directly access the local UofA newgroups!
Sounds Grrrrrrrrrrreat! How do I do it?
Well you start off by telnetting to GPU and typing tin J at the command prompt OR you can access the news server by going through a proxy. This method will allow you to take advantage of the UofA NNTP services for 30 minutes before your connection is reset - ample time to download posting from your favorite newsgroups.
Change your current NNTP News Server to inproxy.srv.ualberta.ca. Authenticate your connection.
If you do not authenticate before attempting to access the news server or your 30-minute time limit expires, you will most likely encounter an error from your newsreader stating that it was unable to connect to the news server. In order to remedy this situation, you will need to direct your web browser to the following URL https://inproxy.srv.ualberta.ca/auth.html.
WARNING!!!! This procedure requires you to submit your CNS Computing ID and Password. Before doing so be 100% sure this site is secure by looking for the Lock found at the bottom of Internet Explorer's status bar or the non "cracked" Key found at the bottom of Netscape's status bar - suggesting that this HTML document is somewhat secure.
After submitting your CNS ID and Password, your 30-minute access time will begin. If you disconnect from the Internet, you will most likely be required to re-authenticate.
