How to read and post to newsgroups:
This is a short guide to reading newsgroups (with a basis towards the EE552
newsgroup) using either Tin or Netscape.
It is not intended to be a full-blown introduction, just enough to
get you up and running. When posting to newsgroups
there is some etiquette, there many web pages devoted to this and CNS probably
has some brocehure on it as well.
If you want to read more on this topic, this web-page is a good start

.
With Tin
With Netscape 4.x
There are other programs besides tin and netscape that you can use:
On UNIX
- nn : this is available on nyquist but note that nn wrecks your .newsrc
file so it can't be used with tin
- knews : also available on nyquist
- slrn : not on nyquist
On Windows
- Free Agent
is probably most popular
- Many others check <http://www.tucows.com/>
Tin is a pretty good reader in my opinion and that is what I use.

With Tin:
Before you actually start tin, you will probably want to create a .newsrc
file in
your home directory. This file tells tin which newsgroups you
want to subscribe
to. Here is one with the entry for
EE 552 already made, save it to your home directory
as ".newsrc" without the quotes.
For additional commands/help to what is covered here, just type "h"
inside tin.
Basic Reading:
-
to start tin, type "tin" at the command prompt
If it asks you if you want to subscribe to a newsgroup, just use "q" to
skip that stage.
-
it should start up and show a list of your newsgroups,
which in this case should include ualberta.courses.ee.552
-
use your UP and DOWN arrow keys to select the newsgroup you want to read
and hit enter
-
now you should be looking at a listing of articles
that have posted to the news group
-
use your UP and DOWN arrow keys to select the article
you want to read and hit enter
-
once you are finished reading, use "q" to back up into the article listing
window
-
To back up to the newsgroup listing type "q" again
-
To exit tin, use SHIFT-q
When you are looking at the article listings in a newsgroup you might notice
some of them
have a "+4" or "+n", these articles have had followups posted
to them. To read followups to an article, use
your UP and DOWN arrow keys to select the article and press
the "l" key, you will now see a listing of
the followups to the original article. To backup, you can use
"q".
You might notice that articles you have read in the past are no longer
listed, tin by default does not display "read"
articles. To display "read" articles, you can use "r".
Tin will display "read" articles that have new followups posted
to them. If you want to change this behaviour then you change
the option in myhomedir/.tin/tinrc
show_only_unread=ON
to
show_only_unread=OFF
Posting a Message:
As a new article:
-
Select the newsgroup you want to post to and hit enter
-
Type "w"
-
Enter a subject and press "enter"
-
This will bring you to your article body, you type in your message here.
-
When you are done, use Ctrl-x
-
Now you can choose to post the article ("p"), spell check it ("i"), edit
it again ("e") or cancel it ("q")
-
Before posting check the information on screen (i.e. newsgroup) and then
to post it, use "p"
-
tin will give you a message confirming your post
-
and you are done
It takes a little time for a posting to occur, so don't be shocked if your
article is not posted for a while (news servers are
busy machines).
As a followup:
-
Select the article you want to follow up and hit enter
-
Type "f"
-
You are now in the article body, you will notice that the original article
is copied into the body for you
-
Add your comment to the article
