Engineering Drawings (System Block Diagram)
A full set of Engineering Drawings would include a set of visuals that fully characterize the design of a system. However, for this submission, only a System Block Diagram is expected since it is one of the first steps in a top-down systems design approach. Submission of full schematics will be required in the Design Proposal item, due later in the term. The System Block Diagram is used to communicate the design at a level just above that of a schematic (or other wiring diagram). Please ensure that it:
  • describes the main part used in the specific blocks;
  • is at a level from which creation of a circuit schematic will naturally follow; and
  • indicates how the microcontroller resources are allocated (by labeling of connections as SPI, UART, DI, etc.), assuming a microcontroller is used.
This block diagram is at a level of abstraction that makes it possible to understand signaling requirements. Understanding this will allow appropriate selection of a microcontroller that has sufficient I/O, peripherals, memory, and processing capabilities. (Selection of a particular microcontroller is not expected at this point.)

Please provide sufficient detail in the block diagram to allow scope to become apparent. For instance, the following hardware block diagram, although accurate, does not show enough detail:

However, the following block diagram, describing the same system, is at a level which more accurately reflects the project, and is therefore more appropriate for the requested submission (note again that allocation of an MCU is not required at this point in time):

Note: Please do not submit a bitmapped version of the block diagram. The JPEGs shown here have poor readability and would not form a good submission.

Grading

The following marking scheme will be used: marking scheme.

Submission

Submission of this item is a two-step process. Please complete both submissions by 4PM on the date noted in the syllabus:
Electronic Submission: Please submit an electronic copy of a PDF version of this item by using the EE Capstone Submission Facility. (Any member of a group may submit on behalf of their entire group.)
Paper Submission: To allow for peer-review of your submission, please submit as many paper copies of the item as there are members in your group. (e.g. a group of three submits three copies.) Make the submission to the course submission box outside the ECE General Office. Please do not staple the copies together. Use of a paper clip is welcome!

Grading of Peer Review

This item is peer-reviewed: shortly after the deadline for paper submission, described above, all individuals in the class will be asked to review another group's submission. To assist with this process, a sheet for you to fill out will be provided along with with the author group's work: Engineering Drawings (System Block Diagram) Review Sheet. Your review of this work will then be evaluated by course instruction personnel according to this Engineering Drawings (System Block Diagram) Review Evaluation rubric.

Submission of Peer Reviewed Work

Please return the marked-up copy of the work you reviewed (complete with the review sheet) to the course submission box outside the ECE General Office by 4PM on the date noted in the syllabus.

Return of Peer Reviewed Work by Author Groups

Since reviewed items contain work by both the author group and the reviewer, they will be kept by your instructor and destroyed according to FOIPP regulations. Return of this reviewed work is expected by the date of Design Proposal Final Submission.
